The Respiratory Research Center is home to an established postdoctoral training program in Respiratory Medicine and Exercise Physiology.

The Program. A one-of-its-kind in the US training program focusing on patient-relevant researcher training at the interface between respiratory and exercise therapeutics. The mission of the Postdoctoral Training Program is to provide a world-leading training environment that brings together basic, translational and clinical researchers, devoted to the understanding the of physiological impacts of chronic respiratory disorders on respiratory and physical function and to translate this knowledge into therapeutic strategies.

The Curriculum. The training program includes courses in Responsible Conduct in Research, Developing and Writing Grant Proposals, Respiratory Physiology and Pathophysiology, Pulmonary Immunology, Pulmonary Diagnostics, Exercise Testing and Interpretation, and Statistics and Informatics. Postdoctoral researchers work directly with clinical fellows and faculty to provide an immersive research training experience with rotations in basic, translational and clinical research laboratories and specialization in a chosen area.

Our Mentors. Our world-recognized research faculty support and mentor trainees throughout the program. Our strong links with local, national and international research collaborators enhance the mentor pool and the training experience.

Our Goal. Our goal is to provide trainees with a comprehensive conceptual framework to understand breathing, respiration and exercise in health and disease, to develop the ability to perform meaningful investigations of these responses in animal models or humans, and confer the professional skills necessary to succeed in a competitive research environment.

Our Track Record. More than 80% of our graduates have gone on to faculty positions in universities or hospitals. Other venues include industry and further professional training.
